The IRCC’s backlog is estimated at 1.8 million applications for immigration.

We’ve received information from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that shows the following number of applications that IRCC’s inventory at the time of October 27 2021 (figures are round):

• 548,000 applications for permanent residence ( economic, family refugee, human rights class applications)
• 776,000 applications for temporary residence (applications to permit to study, work permits and temporary resident visas and visitor extensions)
• 468,000 Canadian citizenship applications (as of October 26)
• 1792,000 applications total in inventory

The figures of the IRCC indicate that their backlog has risen by more than 350,000 applications since July.

In August, the article written by Nicholas Keung of the Toronto Star indicated that the backlog of work as of July 6 2021, was estimated at:

• 375,000 applications for permanent residence
• 703,000 temporary applications for residence
• 3.70,000 Canadian citizen applications for citizenship. The Star stated that the figure does not include Canadian citizenship applications in the IRCC’s mailrooms, which have not yet been processed.
• Total applications of 1,448,000 in stock

In an email sent to CIC News, an IRCC spokesperson stated, “Ongoing restrictions on international travel and border restrictions, as well as the insufficient capacity for operations overseas, and the inability of customers to get documents due to the consequences COVID-19 have created obstacles in the process continuum. This makes it difficult for IRCC to process applications and creates delays beyond IRCC’s control.”

In the same breath, an official acknowledged the issues applicants face and said, “Despite all efforts we make, we recognize the fact that applicants may have had long wait times during the processing of their application, and we will remain determined to do as much as we can to cut down the processing time. We appreciate your patience, understanding and compassion at, and look forward to welcoming new applicants into Canada.”

IRCC also shared information about the amount of applications that it has processed since the outbreak:

• Thirty-seven thousand permanent residence applications were processed between January and September 2021. It processed 214,000 applications by 2020.
• One hundred fifty thousand temporary residence applications were processed between January and September 2021. This is compared to close to 1,700,000 applications submitted in 2020.
• 13.4000 Canadian citizenship applications were processed between January and September 2021. This is in contrast to around 80k applications processed in 2020.
